Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Chana Dhal / கடலைப் பருப்பு - soaked in enough water for 3~4hours
  • 1 tsp Fennel seed / சோம்பு
  • 2 nos Onion / வெங்காயம் - finely chopped
  • 1 nos Tomato / தக்காளி - chopped
  • 1" piece Ginger / இஞ்சி
  • 4 - 5 pod Garlic / பூண்டு
  • 4 - 5 nos Red Chili, Dry / வற மிளகாய் - adjust to your spice level
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder / மல்லித் தூள்
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder / மஞ்சள் தூள்
  • 1" piece Cinnamon stick / லவங்கப் பட்டை
  • 1 nos Bay leaf, Dry
  • 3 tbsp Oil / எண்ணெய்
  • 1 nos Cardamom, Green / ஏலக்காய்
  • 1 nos Cloves / லவங்கம்
  • 1 tsp Salt / உப்பு - adjust to your taste
  • 10 nos Mint leaves, Fresh / புதீனா இலை
  • 1 bunch Curry leaves, Fresh / கருவேப்பிலை
  • 1 bunch Coriander leaves, Fresh / கொத்தமல்லி

Instructions
 

  • Drain and grind channa dhal into coarse mixture
  • Split the mixture into smaller balls and flatten them
  • Steam the flattened mixture for about 12~15min, allow it to cool
  • Grind red chili, fennel seeds, ginger, garlic, mint leaves, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, half of curry leaves into coarse paste
  • Crumble the steamed mixture roughly
  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Add bay leaf
  • Add onion and sauté until transparent
  • Add the masala paste and sauté well
  • Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, tomato, mix well
  • Sauté until tomato are mushy
  • Add 2~3cups of water, bring to a boil
  • Lower the flame
  • Add crumbled mixture and allow it to boil
  • Once the mixture becomes a thick consistency
  • Garnish with curry leaf, coriander leaf
