Kadala Curry
Ingredients
- 2 cup Chana, Brown - soaked for 5~6hrs
- 1 cup Coconut, Fresh / தேங்காய் - grated
- 1 cup Onion / வெங்காயம் - finely chopped
- 10 nos Shallots - peeled (optional)
- 1 cup Tomato / தக்காளி - finely chopped
- 2 nos Green Chili, Fresh / பச்சை மிளகாய் - long slit
- 1 tsp Ginger / இஞ்சி - finely chopped
- 1 tsp Garlic / பூண்டு - finely chopped
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder / மஞ்சள் தூள்
- 1 tsp Coriander powder / மல்லித் தூள்
- 1 tsp Red Chili powder / மிளகாய்த் தூள்
- 1 tsp Garam Masala powder
- 1 tsp Salt / உப்பு - adjust to your taste
- 1 tsp Mustard seed / கடுகு
- 2 nos Red Chili, Dry / வற மிளகாய் - adjust to your spice level
- 2 tbsp Oil / எண்ணெய்
- 1 pinch Asafoetida / பெருங்காயம்
- 1 bunch Curry leaves, Fresh / கருவேப்பிலை
- 1 bunch Coriander leaves, Fresh / கொத்தமல்லி
Instructions
- Pressure cook soaked chana up to 5whistles with little salt and sufficient water
- Heat oil in a pan
- Sauté coconut, ginger, garlic, half of cut onion, half of cut tomato, a ladle of cooked chana and grind it into a fine paste
- Heat rest of oil
- Sauté red chili and curry leaves and keep aside
- Temper mustard seeds and sauté rest of cut onions and shallots until raw smell goes off
- Add green chili, tomato and sauté until mushy
- Add the ground paste and sauté well
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, asafoetida, coriander powder, salt and cook well
- Add cooked chana along with the water used for cooking and allow it to boil in medium flame
- Garnish with sautéd red chili, curry leaves and fresh coriander leaves
- Serve hot with Puttu
