Aval Upma
Ingredients
- 2 cup Poha / அவல் - aval
- 2 nos Onion / வெங்காயம் - finely chopped
- 4 – 5 nos Green Chili, Fresh / பச்சை மிளகாய் - long slits, adjust to your spice level
- 1 inch Ginger / இஞ்சி - finely chopped
- 1 bunch Coriander leaves, Fresh / கொத்தமல்லி - chopped
- 1 bunch Curry leaves, Fresh / கருவேப்பிலை
- 1 tsp Salt / உப்பு - adjust to your taste
- 1 tbsp Cashew nut / முந்திரிப் பருப்பு
- 1 tbsp Peanut / வேர்க் கடலை
- 2 tbsp Green Peas, Fresh / பச்சைப் பட்டாணி - optional
- 1 tsp Mustard seed / கடுகு
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder / மஞ்சள் தூள்
- 1 tsp Urad Dhal / உளுத்தம் பருப்பு
- 1 tsp Chana Dhal / கடலைப் பருப்பு
- 1 pinch Asafoetida / பெருங்காயம்
- 2 tbsp Oil / எண்ணெய்
Instructions
- Wash poha under running water for 1-2min [if you use thick poha, then soak it for 5~7min]
- Drain water and keep aside
- Heat oil in a pan
- Temper mustard allow it to splutter
- Add urad dhal, chana dhal and fry them well until golden brown
- Add curry leaves, green chili, ginger and fry well
- Add cashew nut/ pea nut and fry them well
- Add onion and sauté until raw smell goes off
- Add green peas and sauté until its soft
- Add turmeric powder, asafoetida, salt and mix well
- Add poha and mix and cook for few minutes
- Garnish with coriander leaves
- Serve with coconut/mint chutney

Variation
* You may add fresh grated coconut to garnish which will give a different taste
