Onion Salan Gravy
Ingredients
- 2 nos Onion / வெங்காயம் - thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp Oil / எண்ணெய்
- 1 tsp Mustard seed / கடுகு
- 1 tsp Cumin seed / சீரகம்
- ½ tsp Ginger / இஞ்சி - paste
- ½ tsp Garlic / பூண்டு - paste
- 1 tsp Red Chili powder / மிளகாய்த் தூள் - adjust to your spice level
- 1 tsp Coriander powder / மல்லித் தூள்
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder / மஞ்சள் தூள்
- 1 tsp Cumin powder / சீரகத் தூள்
- 1 tsp Salt / உப்பு - adjust to your taste
- 1 tbsp Jaggery / வெல்லம் - grated
- 1 bunch Curry leaves, Fresh / கருவேப்பிலை
for Gravy
- 100 gm Peanut / வேர்க் கடலை
- 50 gm Sesame seed, Black / எள்ளு, கருப்பு
- 100 gm Coconut, Fresh / தேங்காய் - desicated
- 1 nos Onion / வெங்காயம் - diced
- 50 ml Sour Yogurt
- 100 gm Coconut, Fresh / தேங்காய் - desicated
- 1 nos Onion / வெங்காயம் - diced
- 50 ml Sour Yogurt
Instructions
Gravy
- Roast peanuts, keep aside
- Roast sesame seeds, keep aside
- Roast coconut, keep aside
- Sauté diced onion, mix with roasted peanut, sesame, coconut, allow to cool down
- Grind it into a fine paste, keep aside
Main
- Heat oil in a pan
- Sauté sliced onion along with little salt until translucent
- Add mustard seeds, allow it to splutter
- Add cumin seeds
- Add ginger, garlic paste, curry leaves
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder
- Add the ground paste
- Add water, mix well
- Add jaggery, salt, mix well
- Bring to a boil
- Simmer for about 15~20min
- Add yogurt, mix well
- Add the sautéd onion
- Allow it to rest for a few mins, the oil will start float on top

Serve hot along with biriyani
