Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Rice / அரிசி
  • ½ cup Thoor dhal / துவரம் பருப்பு
  • ½ cup Chana Dhal / கடலைப் பருப்பு
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper / மிளகு
  • 2 tsp Mustard seed / கடுகு
  • 3 tbsp Coconut, Fresh / தேங்காய் - grated
  • 1 tsp Salt / உப்பு - adjust to your taste
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida / பெருங்காயம்
  • 1 bunch Curry leaves, Fresh / கருவேப்பிலை
  • 1 bunch Coriander leaves, Fresh / கொத்தமல்லி - chopped
  • 3 – 5 nos Red Chili, Dry / வற மிளகாய்
  • 100 gm Oil / எண்ணெய்
  • 3 cups Water / தண்ணீர்

Instructions
 

  • Clean rice, thoor dhal, chana dhal, black pepper
  • Grind it into a medium coarse powder should not be too fine and too coarse
  • Heat 1tbsp of oil in a frying pan
  • Add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter
  • Add red chili, coconut, curry leaves, fresh coriander, asafoetida and sauté well
  • Add water and allow it to boil
  • Add ground coarse powder little by little into boiling water and mix thoroughly without forming lumps
  • Simmer the flame and close the pan with a lid for 2~3min and allow it to cook
  • Switch off the flame and allow it to cool for sometime
  • Take about 1tbsp of above mix and flatten it to make a circular shape just like a cutlet and shallow fry it both sides
  • Serve hot with coconut chutney and/or mint chutney

Notes

Variation
* If you are calorie conscious, you could skip the shallow frying part and make a ball with 1tbsp of mix and steam it like idli
