Heat oil in a pan
Add mustard, allow it to splutter
Add channa dhal, urad dhal
Add green chili, curry leaves, asafoetida, fry a little
Add salt
Add 3~3½cups of water, allow it to boil
Add rava little by little while stirring, such that no lumps are formed, mix well
Close cook in low flame for 3~4min
Allow upma to cool
Now make upma into multiple balls of same size
Steam cook for 10min
