Onion Thokku
Ingredients
- 250 gm Onion, Small / வெங்காயம், சிறியது - peeled
- 1 lemon size Tamarind / புளி
- 10 nos Red Chili, Dry / வற மிளகாய்
- 1 tsp Salt / உப்பு - adjust to your taste
- 100 ml Sesame Oil / நல்லெண்ணெய்
- 1 tsp Mustard seed / கடுகு
- 2 tsp Urad Dhal / உளுத்தம் பருப்பு
- 1 pinch Asafoetida / பெருங்காயம்
- 1 bunch Curry leaves, Fresh / கருவேப்பிலை
Instructions
- Heat 2~3tsp of oil in a pan
- Saute the onions until they are soft and turn translucent
- Add tamarind and red chili and sauté them and allow it to cool
- Grind them in a mixer into a coarse paste
- Heat rest of oil and temper with mustard
- When mustard starts to splutter add urad dhal and fry till golden brown
- Add the ground onion mix to the pan
- Cook them in medium flame until the mix is solidified
- Serve with dosa, idly or curd rice

Note
- Store in a air tight dry container
- Store in a cool dry place
- Never use damp spoon or spatula
